School Nutrition Programme Launched

Our school nutrition programme, in partnership with Bayer, gained media coverage from eNCA, Food for Mzansi, and The Poultry Site. This project will help address the nutrition needs of learners who often miss out on critical nutrients due to food insecurity while creating jobs.

Eggs are a nutritious source of protein, which is essential for growth and development. Trained local youth from Buhle Farmers’ Academy to lead daily egg production, emphasizing sustainable farming practices and community development.

This project is situated in three nearby schools: Delpark Primary, Phaphamani Secondary, and Swartklip Combined School. However, the eggs will be distributed to all 23 schools within the municipality. Over 18 000 learners will receive boxes of eggs to take home to their families, giving them access to healthy and nutritious meals, contributing to their overall health and well-being.

The project has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of learners and the community at large. Mamati Tembe of Bayer Africa told eNCA that the project focuses on improving nutrition while involving the learners and community. Infrastructure for egg production was established in three schools, employing six individuals for efficient operations. The hope is that the project will be sustainable well into the future.

“The purpose is to inspire others and the community to start similar initiatives, and to carry on with this one,” she said.
